Minimizing Psoriasis Flares

By Colby Evans, MD

Even if you’re doing everything you can to manage your psoriasis, you may still experience flares from time to time. To minimize flares, it helps to be aware of your triggers and to monitor your symptoms.

Common triggers include physical and emotional stress, weather (particularly in winter, when the air is dry and there’s less sunlight), and medications, such as beta-blockers and lithium. Diet is a less common psoriasis trigger, but if you’re concerned about diet-related flares, consider meeting with a nutritionist or dietitian who specializes in chronic diseases.

If you’re not sure what’s triggering your flares, start a symptoms log. Track the symptoms you regularly experience, along with any other factors — stress, weather, or medications — that coincide with them. Review the log to see whether there are any relationships between your symptoms and these other factors.

Minimizing flares also means doing your best to manage your condition. Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight. Reduce stress. Use a good moisturizer and consider phototherapy for seasonal flares. If medication is a trigger, talk to your doctor about an alternative prescription. It’s also important to maintain a good relationship with a dermatologist who can help you develop and hone your treatment regimen.
