How to Make a Healthy Lunch

It's too easy to reach for the quick burger and fries on your lunch break. But with some quick prep work and forethought, you can make a more healthy and fulfilling lunch for yourself or for your family. It's a good idea to use lunch as an opportunity to work healthy foods into your diet, keeping yourself in great shape and full throughout the day.

Ingredients

  • Silverware
  • 2 slices of whole grain bread
  • One or 2 slices of lean white meat
  • 3 pieces of dark green lettuce
  • One teaspoon of low fat mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sliced raw vegetables
  • 3/4 cup berries or one piece of fruit
  • One small bag of baked chips
  • Water or low sugar juice

Steps

  1. Add the mayonnaise, lettuce and meat to the sandwich.
  2. Wash the fruit.
  3. Fill a drinking bottle with your liquid of choice.
  4. Place everything in a lunch box or insulated lunch bag.

    Ham salad, if it's store bought, tends to have an excessive amount of salt. So I would say that the wrap with ham and lettuce is healthier.

  • Always wash fruits and vegetables to remove pesticides and other residue.
  • Eat the vegetables, fruit or chips as a snack between meals, if desired.
  • Refill your drinking bottle with water while at work, if possible. Refresh yourself with fluid periodically throughout the day.
  • If you wish, make a whole wheat wrap with the same ingredients.
  • Wash, slice and package the fruits and vegetables the night before, if desired.
  • Place your lunch in a refrigerator at work, if possible.
  • Set time aside to prepare your lunch.
  • Recycle or reuse plastic drinking bottles.
  • Add some veggies to the sandwich.
  • Mix it up and use different fruit and veggies.
  • If a refrigerator is not available, you can put a frozen ice pack in with your lunch, as this will keep the food fresh and cold for up to eight hours.
  • If you're drinking water for lunch, freeze it the night before so that at lunch, the ice will melt and you'll get cold water!
